Monitoring committee

The objectives of the monitoring committee are to enable the doctoral student to refer to it for advice and moral support during the completion of their research project. It is created during the first year of the thesis. It is carried out from re-registration in the 2nd year of the PhD and must be renewed for each year of re-registration.

Description

2 persons with a computer each discussing on a project

The doctoral student sends a proposal for the composition of the committee (names, functions, and university of the members), to ali.brador@u-paris.fr which is then validated by the doctoral school directors. The thesis director does not step in the choice of members but he or she may be contacted by the doctoral student for opinion and advice. The composition of the monitoring committee may be modified at the request of one of the two parties (student, thesis director).

Composition of the monitoring committee :

  • A minimum of 2 teacher-researchers (Professor, lecturer, Emeritus Professor) including at least 1 with the Accreditation to Direct Research and scientific competence in the field of the thesis.
  • One of the members can be a mental health practitioner if he has a PhD in psychology or psychoanalytic studies.
  • Members must be teacher-researchers from outside the doctoral school and do not participate in the supervision of the thesis.
  • Only one of the two members of the monitoring committee can be rapporteur for the thesis defense if he has the Accreditation to Direct Research. The other member may be part of the jury as an examiner or a guest member.

Progress of the monitoring committee :

The doctoral student agrees on a meeting date with the members of the committee. The meeting must take place before the new registration. It is recommended that the meeting takes place in the presence of all the members but otherwise, the interview may take place with each member of the committee separately.

The interview takes place in two parts: the doctoral student meets the members of their monitoring committee without their thesis director (part 1), and then the members of the monitoring committee meet the thesis director without the doctoral student (part 2).

The meeting consists of a presentation by the doctoral student on:

  • The progress of the thesis
  • Difficulties encountered
  • Scientific activities carried out
  • Doctoral school training attended
  • Then an exchange of organizational and relational questions relating to the supervision of the thesis
  • At the end of the meeting, each member completes the individual monitoring form favorable/unfavorable, for a re-registration and signs it.

To be able to set up the monitoring committee, the Doctoral School provides a list likely to help doctoral students.
