Step 1 | Submit your jury composition – 3 months before the defense date

The proposal for the composition of the jury and the choice of rapporteurs must be submitted to the doctoral school by the Doctoral Student.

After validation, the proposal for the composition of the jury is entered via a dematerialized DEMAT application. The doctoral student receives an e-mail on their u-paris student address.

The provisions relating to the composition of the jury and the designation of rapporteurs are specified in articles 17 and 18 of the decree of May 25, 2016 (Attention! See document Note sur la composition de jury and the choice of rapporteurs).

The original proposal for the composition of the jury signed by the thesis directors must be submitted to the doctoral school. It must be accompanied by a summary of the thesis and the list of publications.

After the opinion of the doctoral school directors, the composition of the jury is transmitted by the doctoral school to the defense team for decision and signature of the College of Doctoral Schools director.

Any modification to the composition of the jury after approval by the College of Doctoral School will result in the cancellation of the current defense procedure.

In the case of a confidential or closed thesis, a request for confidentiality must be made in advance by the thesis director when submitting the composition of the jury. The letter justifying this request must be sent to the defense team (with a copy to the doctoral school), so it can be recorded by the University library.

To reserve a room for the defense, the doctoral student must contact his doctoral school.

Step 2 | Validation of the jury and sending of the thesis to the rapporteurs at the latest 2 months before the defense

After notification and signature of the composition of the jury by the college of the doctoral school director, the doctoral student must send a copy of his thesis to the designated rapporteurs (at the latest 2 months before the defense date). It is recommended to allow at least 1 month for the rapporteurs to examine the thesis work. The report return date is set at 1 month before the defense.

The official email is sent to the rapporteurs by the defense team, accompanied by an evaluation form to complete.

Doctoral theses from Université Paris Cité must be submitted to the Compilatio source comparison software. It is up to the thesis director to provide a certificate of analysis of the Compilatio software.

After the validation of the jury, the candidate receives the link to submit the electronic version of the thesis.

The thesis submission is done by a dematerialized application. The thesis will be processed by the university library for archiving, reporting, and distribution after the defense.

You will find all the tools, links, and information useful for writing, submitting, and disseminating the thesis on the Submit Your Doctoral Thesis page.

Step 3 | Authorization for defense and submission of the electronic version of the thesis

At least 1 month before the defense date

The candidate must provide information regarding the time and the defense room if this has not already been done.

The certificate of submission of the thesis to the Compilatio software, signed by the thesis director, must be sent to the defense team.

Prior reports must be returned to the Doctoral School. Upon receipt, the defense authorization, accompanied by the reports, is sent to the Doctoral School director for approval.

On the advice of the director of the doctoral school, the authorization request is then sent to the defense team for the opinion of the College of Doctoral Schools director.

Three weeks at the latest before the date set for the defense, the first electronic version of the thesis is processed and validated by the university library.

Step 4 | Sending defense documents to the thesis director and convening the jury

At least in the 2 weeks preceding the date set for the defense, sending invitations with a copy of the reports to the members of the jury and the doctoral student.

The thesis director receives all the administrative documents necessary for the defense. It will be up to the thesis director to transmit the documents to the President-designate on the day of the defense.

The defense is public unless an exception is granted exceptionally by the President of Paris Cité University if the subject of the thesis is of a proven confidential nature. For a closed-door defense request, the thesis director must send a written request justifying the confidential nature of the defense. The request must be submitted for the opinion of the College of Doctoral Schools director by the defense team at the time of validation of the composition of the jury.

After the defense |

Admission (or adjournment) is pronounced after deliberation by the jury.

The defense documents (the Minutes, the jury’s opinion on the publication of the defended thesis and the final defense report) must reach the defense team duly completed and co-signed by all members of the jury by a deadline not exceeding 1 month after the defense.

No certificate of success will be issued before the submission of the final version of the thesis and receipt of the defense documents by the defense team.

If desired after the defense, the doctor has the possibility of submitting a version of the thesis with minor corrections (spelling, layout, etc.) within 1 month.

If on the day of the defense, the jury requests major corrections, the doctor has a period of 3 months to submit the corrected version of the thesis accompanied by the certificate of conformity signed by the president of the jury.
